Mouse Wheel & Quill Willie & Frank--
Shakespeare?
In Nano-Time

Shakespeare it Ain't
(Chapter 3)

I guess the only thing I've got to say about the list of words is that I was happy to see that “hate” wasn't in the most common words. And, I'd have been happier if love had come in a little higher than 387.

The floor of Willie and Frank's cage was big enough to include 400 words, each stamped on a one inch square. The researchers said that it seemed too much to hope for that they would be able to work together well enough to manage a shift key, so all the words were in ALL CAPS, just to keep from adding unintentional weight to what they, um, typed.

There was a three inch border all the way around, that the mat was attached to. It supported the touch pad's weight, plus it had a place for the small containers for food and water, and a ramp that led up to a second floor, one with an exercise wheel and some stuff to gnaw on. Apparently you have to do that to keep mice's teeth worn down, or they'll hurt themselves. I guess, if it was me stuck in a cage twenty four - seven, they'd have to keep my teeth worn down, too,  so I didn't gnaw through my own wrists. (Ok, that was a bit off topic. Sorry.)

The entire thing was waterproofed, for obvious reasons,  and can be cleaned with a squeegee. With the exception of the upper loft and the three inch border, anywhere Willie and Frank wandered would produce words on the computer screen. And holy cow, could those little guys scamper around.

The first hour or so, while they were checking out the neighborhood? They must have touched every word. Which was good for me.  It meant that I knew it all worked.

The downside was that all that running back and forth just looked kind of like this:

THE NAME SHE SUCH OF VERY WHICH FOLLOW TO THROUGH DO ACT AND JUST THEIR WAY A FORM TIME ASK IN MUCH OF IF MEN IS GREAT WILL CHANGE IT THINK WAY WENT YOU SAY ABOUT LIGHT THAT HELP MANY KIND OF HE LOW THEN OFF WAS LINE THEM NEED FOR BEFORE WOULD HOUSE ON TURN WRITE PICTURE ARE CAUSE LIKE TRY WITH SAME SO US ASS AS MEAN THESE AGAIN I DIFFER HER ANIMAL HIS MOVE LONG POINT THEY RIGHT MAKE MOTHER BE BOY THING WORLD AT OLD SEE NEAR ONE TOO HIM BUILD HAVE DOES TWO SELF THIS TELL HAS EARTH FROM SENTENCE LOOK FATHER OR SET OR SET HAD THREE HAD THREE BY HOT AIR WANT BUT WELLTHERE SMAL WE END CAN PUT OUT HOME OTHER READ WERE HAND ALL PORT YOUR LARGE WHEN WORD SUCK LAND HOW HERE SAID MUST AN BIG EACH HIGH SHE SUCH WHICH FOLLOW DO ACT THEIR WHY TIME ASK IF MEN WILL CHANGE WOMEN WAY WENT ABOUT MANY KIND THEN OFF NEED WOULD HOUSE PICTURE WRITE LIKE TRY WOMEN SO US THESE AGAIN HER ANIMAL ONE POINT MAKE MOTHER THING WORLD SEE NEAR BROTHER BUILD HIM TWO SELF EARTH LOOK HEAD MORE SISTER SHOULD PAGE GO COULD OWN STAND DID COUNTRY MY FOUND SOUND ANSWER SCHOOL NO MOST GROW

Not much to inspire confidence in the experiment, huh?

Willie and Frank seemed to be settled in, and I was as comfortable as I was going to get.

Oh, and I found out, that day, why I only got the black and white TV.  Turns out, according to Doctor Wizell, one of the research team, mice are color blind.

Yeah, but I wasn't. Oh well.

Another thing? Somewhere in the back of my head I had the idea that this job was going to come with a truckload of free cheese. Nope, not a crumb. Seems the mice were on some kind of strictly controlled diet. Doc Wizell said the research team was monitoring the food and that they used it to control the drug applications.

And, even if they were going to give them cheese, I wasn't getting to it. The cage door had this key card lock on it. My building access card wasn't programmed for it. That was left to the research assistants.  They came down several times a day to give Willie and Frank these weird colored injections and measure the food and water left in the containers. I guess they were logging what they ate, when and whatever. Maybe they were planning to gauge what foods inspired the mice to write more.

Ah Will-eee, mon chere mousee.
You are sooo creative when you have had the Gouda!”

Maybe they were just afraid I'd take the mice out and play with them, -- Take them out partying and lose them, or something.

I don't think Willie or Frank gave a mouse turd one way or the other about what the lab guys thought. (and yes, they were monitoring and measuring those, too.  ick.)

But, I can tell you for a fact that Willie and Frank sure didn't want the shots. As a matter of fact, the first time I got the idea the drugs were working was the day that, about five minutes before shot time, Frank hid behind the water bowl. He wasn't going to come out until the guy with the needle went away either. He had to reach in and pin Frank down with one hand to give him the shot.

It wasn't the hiding that made me suspicious. It was the dirty look Frank gave me after the research guy was gone.
