Chapter One --
I Found a Knife

I found a bloody knife in my basement late last night. It was in a small, rust covered tin box, tucked up inside a panel in the basement ceiling.

See, three years ago my wife and I bought a large, hundred year old, 2-story house in Joshua's Hollow, Illinois. I hadn't thought of it before but, looked at from a distance, it seems like just the kind of place to find a bloody knife.

A year ago we decided to wire the place for internet access. I ran an internet cable from the outside phone box to the floorboard in the library. The library is on the first floor. Being basically lazy, I just stapled the wire in place, running it along the basement ceiling, then drilled a small hole in the floor to push the wire through.

The ceiling of the basement is covered with some ancient fiberboard crap that is just tacked up anyway. I had about 25 feet of extra cable in the run, so I rolled it up and stuffed it into a loose fiberboard panel. Some time in the last few days it came loose.

Right up front? I'm blaming the cats. The central heat ducts run along the same ceiling area in the basement. There is a gap of about eight inches between the top of the ducts and the ceiling. The cats like to sleep on top of the ducts... taking advantage of the heat probably. I figure one of the cats saw the loose wire hanging down and decided to play with it. Distracted yet? Sorry, I know. You want to hear about the knife.

I rolled the wire back in a ball and stuffed it farther up into the ceiling. That's when the box fell out. It popped open when it hit the concrete basement floor. Out came the knife, wrapped in a tattered, dirt and blood stained dish towel. Underneath it was a faded bus ticket. Nothing else, just the knife and the bus ticket.

Morning didn't shed any new light on the discovery, or on what to do about it. Or if there was anything to do about it.

Who's knife had it been? How long had it been hidden there? Who's blood was on it?

And what happened to the person who didn't use that bus ticket....
